Jenny Kae Quilts/Quilter's Color Course

The Struggle

Her forehead was creased from worry.  “Can you help me?” she said.  She pulled a pattern and a swatch of fabric out of her bag and placed them on the cutting table.  “I want to make this quilt for my niece but…”  Her eyes darted around the shop and over the bolts of fabric. Then her eyes met mine. Discouragement covered her face. “Please?  I don’t even know where to start.”

I gave what I hoped was an encouraging smile and said “Of course, I will help you. Let me see the pattern and fabric.”

“Ok but I am not good at this part.  My sister is so much better at picking out fabric.  Her quilts are always so pretty.”

“Don’t worry, I will help you.  We will find something you, and your niece, will love. Let’s get started.”

A happy hour passed and we found fabrics for all the lights, mediums and darks in her nieces’ favorite colors, her smile came out.  Her eyes lit up when we matched the final accent color and binding.  As I cut the needed yardage, she chatted happily about the beloved niece and how much she will love the quilt and how relieved she was to find all these fabrics.

Then she looked at me with tears welling up in her eyes.  “Thank you. I could not have done it without your help and I was so worried.  Thank you.”  Embarrassed, she turned her face and wiped away a tear.

I offered the kindest smile I could and said, “The quilt will be beautiful.  It was my pleasure and I am here whenever you need me.”

As she left the store, my heart broke for her.   She dreaded picking fabric.  She lacked confidence and understanding. There are so many important things to stress about in life - fabric doesn't have to be one of them.

A Better Way

“I hate this picking fabric bit.”

“I never know if I have it right.”

“I just buy the kit, even if I don’t like all the fabrics.  It is easier for me.”

Carol said her greatest frustration is picking color.  She once asked for guidance at a local quilt shop.  They handed her a color wheel and left her alone to shop.  “Jenny, there HAS to be a better way.”

There is.
